langkawi

Hello Langkawi! I was really excited to head here and so many people gave me recommendations of things to do, so once I landed at the airport I headed to my hostel to checkin and I booked to stay in a 32 bed dorm. What the hell. However, on arrival I had been upgraded to a 20 bed (hardly an upgrade I know) as the 32 bed was fully booked, and still, it seemed oddly peaceful given how big it was, and it was right by the beach! Let’s hope for some sunshine over the weekend whilst I’m here. As we were flying over the islands for landing I was super excited for the next few days as it looked lush! I grabbed some dinner on my first night as I arrived fairly late as I had a late afternoon flight, and then chilled out at the hostel with some people I’d met and we just chatted and hungout for a few hours which was nice. The weather seemed significantly nicer here than Penang which I was so glad about. I was more than ready for lots of sunshine and fun things.

First full day here and I headed out to grab a coffee and then to the beach which was sooo nice, white sand clear oceans, except when I went to go in for a dip, jellyfish everywhere!! What the hell.. so that scuppered my plan, after hanging out just on the sand for a few hours catching some rays and reading my book, I headed to grab some lunch and then back to the hostel to hangout there. There was a few people I met in Penang who were arriving today so we all went out together and grabbed some dinner and hungout for the evening which was so nice, we found a really nice little Thai restaurant off of a side street and had some of the most incredible food in there. We bedded down for the night as we had a fun day planned for the following!

Sunday quickly came and the same group of us headed to the SkyBridge and Cable Cars across the island which we were super excited about! In the morning when leaving the hostel we were greeted by a whole load of monkeys which was super cute and then we headed to the café around the corner from where we were staying to grab a coffee, which was insane.. we booked a grab and headed on our way for the day! We had to book a slightly bigger car as there was five of us, but we were laughing quite a lot when a whole minibus turned up for us!

The cable car was such a cool experience. We booked a package which cost 89RM, and it was so worth it. The top was significantly higher than I expected as we saw the cable cars disappearing into the mountains in the distance, and it took quite a long time to get to the top, passing through a middle station on the way too! When we got to the top we had an explore and saw some cool monkeys too. The views were just insane and couldn’t believe it really, picturesque, being able to see all the smaller islands surrounding Langkawi too!

The SkyBridge was also a surreal thing to be able to do. It was fairly daunting I’m not going to lie, it was verrry high and all beneath us was just jungle, there was also glass platforms that you could walk over too which was pretty nifty, but slightly terrifying. The bridge also wobbled in the wind, which Georgie kindly pointed out was a good thing, but did make us feel even more high up! Once we walked to the other side we read a little bit about the bridge and then began the walk back to the cable cars, which involved *a lot* of stairs. When we were walking down it didn’t seem that far, but going back we definitely were a little bit sweaty!

Once we got back down to ground we got a grab back to the main town Chenang and all went and grabbed Subway for lunch. Our grab driver was absolutely hilarious, we just laughed and sung with him for the whole journey and we were airdropping pictures to eachother and accidentally sent some to him, it really made him chuckle and he said he would treasure them and remember us. He told us to remember to put suncream on and all sorts, it was brilliant. We then split up for the afternoon and I went with one of the girls for her to get her nails done, and was obviously super tired as I fell asleep in the chair next to her and she woke me up when she was done. Wowsers! We headed back to the hostel for some downtime for an hour or so before heading out to a beach bar for sunset and to watch the fireshow there.

I think it might have been one of the best sunsets I have seen whilst on my travels, it truly was incredible. I think the company makes a good sunset too, we had so much fun playing around in the sand and laughing at life. I just love the simple things in life, and things like watching eh sunset with people you feel closer than ever too after only a few days is definitely one of those simple things. The fire show was also insane and definitely one of the best I’d seen. Lots of cool tricks and Bonnie from our little group even went up as a volunteer to be surrounded by all these fire tricks, she was definitely braver than me! We laughed a lot and enjoyed a few frozen mango cocktails laughing together for the evening.

As the fire show was coming to an end we saw an actual fire in the distance and it almost shut the whole middle area of the town down, it was wild. We ended up going back to the same Thai place we went to the day before as we could access it, and we were starving, hoping that by the time we were done we might have more hope in being able to get back to our hostel which was beyond where the fire was. We ended up having to walk back along the beach, which wasn’t a bad thing, and finished the night with a game of bullshit before packing up my backpack and heading to bed. Just a note, I still hate packing my bag every few days even almost four months on. Worst task ever.

Monday came and I had a fairly earlyish flight to Kuala Lumpur, my next stop in Malaysia, so it was up, checked out and headed to the airport by 10:30. Lols. I hate early starts but I was very excited to be heading to KL and do some exploring! It then meant that I had an afternoon / evening of exploring once I’d got there too, I had a list so long for here and four days to get through as much as possible. Let’s go! See ya there, Mads x

  1. In addition to its natural attractions, Langkawi has a rich history dating back to ancient times when it was a trading hub for spices and silk. Visitors can explore historical sites like the Mahsuri Tomb and Eagle Square to learn more about the island’s heritage. 😄
